That's true; if Luke is the youngest of the group, most of the others are probably old enough to be children of that group. And resentment--yeah, for getting so many men killed going after a former slave who had only been there a few years. Close-knit rural communities, you're not really "from there" until your family has been there two generations and have married in. I hadn't thought of that.

I totally agree with you on the kind of parenting Luke must have received, given how he turned out.
